The KLF1 Mutation That Controls the Activity of Other Genes
The KLF1 protein is a kind of master switch that's produced in blood cells and it controls the activity of a whole host of other genes. Shen was trying to find out what this protein does and how it works when his team created mice with a mutation in part of this gene. And then they just happened to notice that these mice were sort of staying more active than other mice as they got older and their hair stayed shinier, he says. The discovery could help improve treatments for cancer.
