The Origins of Industrial War

Modernity is a relative concept, as the notions of both war and modernity are always changing. Postmodern critics have raised some more profound and disturbing questions that can be applied to the idea of modernity in war. They point to the irony of the idea of information age warfare, with its promises of greater insight through an abundance of data. What is most disturbing about a phenomenon like Islamic State is the reminder that much about war is unchanging and un-modern.
