1: Hong Kong Silenced: Add Oil

How to become a dictator

CHAPTER

Introduction

Hong Kongers were protesting a bill that would allow Beijing to extradite anyone it wanted to be tried in mainland courts. Hong Kong is a semi-autonomous part of China and it has its own legal system. The protests were about much more too, fighting for democracy, freedom, and preserving Hong Kong's unique way of life. One of the most popular slogans was Gai Yao, or Ad Oil - a very Hong Kong way to encourage someone. Today, all of that is illegal due to one innocuous sounding piece of legislation: National Security Law.
