The resurrection breaks the spell of unanimous opinion which Gerard thinks is the basis for the old sense of the sacred. By the light of the resurrection, the disciples can see, in retrospect, what they could not possibly have seen at the time. To become a Christian is too aware of oneself as a persecutor of Christ. And one is always a persecutors of Christ so far as one lives inside the circle.
