Mother Teresa's Life in the Slums of Calcutta
Mari Marcell Taka-Kara was a child when the city went through one of its most desperate times. Mother Teresa had been stationed as a teacher then head mistress at the Loreto convent in Darjeeling. She was horrified by the poverty she saw on a trip to Calcutta in the late 1940s. Later she told a BBC documentary team that that's when she decided to establish her own order, the missionaries of charity and lived the rest of her life in the slums.
