Golbadin Hekmatyar's influence grew with the money from Washington lining his pockets. As early as 1985, some CIA officers got a bad vibe from him and he was eventually forced to leave Afghanistan. His fanaticism endeared him to US officials eager to ratchet up the pressure on the Soviets but they didn't think about what would happen when he finished killing Russians and turned guns on them.
