Introduction

This week's episode of Sideways is a story of heavy metal, influence and suicide. Over six weeks in the summer of 1990, this trial examined the strange phenomenon of subliminal messaging. And whether it could drive someone to take their life. On July 31, Rob Halford, the lead singer of Birmingham Metal Band Judas Priest, takes to the stand. He's asked to sing a version of one of his songs, Better By You, Better Than Me. It's rather subdued, none of the raging vocals and squalling guitar of the original track.
