The History of the Spitfire Funds

The Supermarine Spitfire was nearly given a much less sexy name than the Spitfire. Other contenders included Scarab, Shrike and Sea Otter. A woman would often sit on the tail of the plane to keep them steady. In 1943 she survived after being left hanging by her hair in RAF Highboldstow. There's even a model that you can see at Tagmere Military Aviation Museum.
