The History of the Long Island Shipyard

In 1781, a Long Island shipbuilder named John Jackson purchased property along the banks of the bay and opened a private shipyard. In 1801 they spent $40,000 to buy 23 acres of land on the west shore of the wall about Bay here in Brooklyn. They don't start building any buildings here until 1805; it doesn't start constructing ships until 1817. With more work being done at the Navy Yard, including at the government's new Navy Yard, more and more human remains were discovered.
