The Effects of High Altitude on Cognitive Decline

When you go into hypoxia, your body will switch to be more reliant on sugar because the first pathway of sugar metabolism is glycolysis. So it only makes sense that your body will prioritize survivability and then push metabolism towards glucose. In metabolically inflexible people, such as diabetic individuals or chronic disease patients, we see an inflexibility. They have high fatty acid metabolism and high fatty acid oxidation and they don't switch over. But generally humans, even to a certain extent, animals, we can see a certain level of adaptation after a week, two weeks. That's when your cognition and your metabolism start to adapt to the high altitude.
