There were a whole series of different views. One was the sort of americ's a philosophical paradise, the sort of yeoman republicans of virtue, simplicity and so on. Another was america, the great wilderness, which toville quite clearly did have,. And chateau briam had been very instrumental in in fabricating the noble savage myth - ew. Many people just thought it was such a different civilization from ours that that really it was. It was now there was nothing we could learn. The other thing which aways was very important in the european imagination was was, of course, slavery.
