What Characteristics of a Theologian or Biblical Scholar?

I like it when people have something new and different, a novel combination of ideas and insights to bring. I would love to see theology and biblical studies become less encumbered by what I consider to be unneeded dogmatic constraints on inquiry and research. The Catholic tradition has sort of disproportionately emphasized correct doctrine to the neglect of the actual practical good that Christians can do in the world if they were to work together.
