opera grew out of viennese operetta and german opera. It was closer to what broadway is to day, or going to the move going to the movies. And it's a little like a modern pop culture equivalent is they do that in film all the time,. Where lines get quoted in films, not necessarily for a dramatic purpose, but the audience gets just a little giggle from them.
