The US used to have the most progressive tax system in the world. High incomes were taxed at 90%, top marginal income tax rate was or even exceeded 90%. The corporate tax rate was 50% on average from 1950 to 1980. Today, no matter how low your wage is, 15% of your wage goes straight into taxes because of payroll taxes.
