The Colfax Massacre
James S. Pike was a correspondent for the New York Tribune, the nation's most influential Republican newspaper. His articles depicted South Carolina's Reconstructionist government as rife with corruption and incompetence. The push for Home Rule grew even stronger in the fall of 1873 when an economic catastrophe struck the nation. It was the worst economic depression the nation had ever faced; few groups suffered more than black farmers.
