Sketch comedy often relies on shared and known information in the world. That's a recurring theme and something that connects sketch comedy today to the sketch comedy of the Greeks. Once you know who your characters are, once you know who George and Elaine and Jerry are, then you just throw them into situations. The comedy is them getting thrown in and you know George is going to react one way or another.
