I've always lived very well below my means. I never wanted to be in danger of losing it all. For years, I just let that money sit in high yield savings accounts earning whatever,. like 3%, 5%. That's enough to make $50,000 a year without any effort. The goalposts kept shifting. And I think eventually in like 2020, I thought, I just need $10,000 a month. It should be enough to pay the bills and live a comfortable life. So I could combine that with a bit of business expertise and hard work to get off this fire train and focus on doing work that I really enjoy while making good money.
