The Importance of Biography in Albania
There was a sense that if you came from a bourgeois or property-owning family, there is something called biography that was always going to follow you throughout your life. But it was, I think, much more constrained and not as socially mobile as I read from your book. My mum studied maths, she never could have studied something that was not a hard science because the idea was to study humanities. You had to be the daughter of a party official or in a family that could be reliable to teach people about Marxism. And so in fact, usually what happened, all the scientists were from backgrounds that were somewhat more dubious than others. Then the politics or the humanities were more open
