Francis Smith was a 29-year-old customs official. On the evening of January 3, he set out on his patrol for the hammer Smith ghost. He brought a musket with him. This was a time before there were any firearms, controls or legislation in Great Britain. So you could more or less walk around freely with any kind of weapon you wanted. And at that point he saw the ghost collapse in a heap on the ground.
