The Fed's Decision to Save Goldman Sachs

The U.S. is up over 125% debt to GDP, compared with Japan's 250%. When your government has so much debt, and your GDP or gross domestic product is only a fraction of that, you're not generating enough income for tax revenue. The issue is that we're not able to pay the interest on our debt annually anymore. We have to issue more debt to pay for it. And that is highly problematic. But they can't crush inflation so tightly that they force us into a terrible recession or depression, because then that just blows up the debt. They've got to keep confidence in still confidence in the US treasury as a global reserve asset.
