When I set out to write the book, I had two very clear goals. One was to write a book that was more accurate than the typical neuroscience book on the shelf. The second was to make a book accessible to non-academics. And it wasn't until I actually started writing the book that I realized how many places those two goals came into conflict with one another. Now I'm engaged in conversations with thousands of people I may never meet. It's a one-way conversation. They're reading my book and maybe having important haystack moments where they can bring their real life knowledge and experiences to bear on my words. But I don't think science belongs to academics alone.
