We owe a tremendous debt to freud, if for nothing else than pointing out that we are not really ourselves. The realities of human life are not under the gaze of its scanning process, at least not in the ordinary way. But one sees troublesome signs when the doctrines and processes of psychiatry, psychoanalysis and so forth become officialized. And i think thomas sass in his books the myth of mental illness and the manufacture of madness, is pointing out something extremely important to us.
