Waterloo Sunset went to number two on the charts, and has since become the most beloved song in the King's whole catalogue. The kinks were invited to play at Monterey Pop Festival but had to turn down because of their visa problems. Marcea came up with the shallow live vocals in the middle eight. And the idea of having the track fade out on cascading well-miked vocals. Once again the kinks were at a turning point.
