The Story of the Fox Sisters
Margaretta and her sister, Catherine Fox, were the youngest two children of the six surviving children born to John and Margaret Fox. Their father, John, a blacksmith and their mother, Margaret, had separated at some point after their fourth child was born in 1820. The family moved several times while Maggie and Kate were young, finally settling in Hydeville, New York in the Finger Lakes region east of Rochester in 1847. They stayed in a temporary cottage next to John Smithy while their permanent home was being built. By March of 1848, the family began to notice manifestations of an unknown origin most often heard as a rapping or knocking sound.
