The FAA wanted to combat the dangers of sleep deprivation that pilots would suffer when they were going on these long haul flights. Dr. David Dinges and Dr. Mark Rosekind found napping earlier in the flight provided exactly this type of resilience to the sleep deprivation suffered during long haul flights for these pilots. The researchers suggested developing a term called prophylactic naps, or preventative naps. But turns out the FAA wasn't keen on that term. They feared snide remarks among some of the pilots based on what it could infer. And so instead in its infinite wisdom, the FAA opted for a term that invoked more strength and leadership and dominance - power naps.
