According to the strict doctrine of the vedanta, there is not an individual soul which passes from life to life. The one who transmigrates is precisely this atman or brahman. This is why we have to imagine the state before birth and after death as blank and ation. Because thought is annihilated in trying to grasp the reality which lies deeper than thinking.
