The Myth of the Specialists

The myth of the specialist is a flawed assumption, says author. We assume that great achievers are lifelong specialists in their respective fields. As one studies the lives of some renowned specialists, there are scare quotes around them. It appears that they often have a number of avocational pursuits,. meaning prior careers or hobbies, that in some way or another influenced, or in many cases facilitated, their main endeavour. This book also has some weaknesses which I'll talk about later - we're going to carry on with a good bit basically.
