The Failure of China's Chip Industry

China has been pouring tens of billions of dollars a year into its chip industry since around 2014 on the Chinese leadership. China is still quite dependent on importing tools and software and advanced semiconductors from abroad. Money alone can't build an effective chip industry because of the precision because of the unique R&D demands. But we shouldn't assume that China has an easy pathway for catching up to the last decade as it remains fairly far behind.
