The Power of Music

Angie Hobbes is a professor of the public understanding of philosophy at Sheffield University. She says Plato's ideas about harmony emerge following the death of his great friend and teacher, Socrates. He arrives in southern Italy to live and study with the Pythagorean communities there. They appear recently to have discovered that music could be mathematically notated but harmonies were the result of precise mathematical ratios between lengths of string on the live. This discovery seems to have had a really profound impact on Plato.
