Is the Obsession With Big Ideas Really About Growth?

I wonder if the whole obsession with big ideas is really about an obsession with growth, and whether i slow down in growth actually means a slow down in progress. I would be incredibly open and pleased if we could find a way of divorcing a sense of progress from economic gro. The body of scientific knowledge that we've built up about the universe is even greater than anything we've done economically for our species. For me, yes, fine. Let's get rid of it. But the idea that then we don't have to keep pushing forward on some measure may not be true.
