Fat Back Drumming
Fatback is a broad kind of shorthand term. It's an incomplete term, really. There isn't any one thing that does or doesn't make a groove fatback. The whole system was born from improvisational jams where james brown would holler and sing at the band. He'd indicate which notes he wanted emphasize. So your average funk groove combines those three elements to create a fundamental thump, pop and sizzle. Groove that drives millions of songs.
Drummers like Clyde Stubblefield, Zigaboo Modeliste, and Bernard Purdie defined the sound of the bands they played with not because of their flashy chops, but because they knew how to lock down a groove. On this episode, Kirk goes deep into one groove apiece by each of those drummers - Stubblefield on James Brown's "Cold Sweat," Modeliste on The Meters' "Cissy Strut," and Purdie on Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" - with help from special guest drummer Russ Kleiner.
