Surveillance and Censorship of the Chinese Diaspora

This chapter examines the growing unrest in China during November 2022, ignited by stringent pandemic measures and a tragic fire in Urumqi that led to widespread protests. It highlights the critical role of social media in spreading information and the Chinese government's strategies to monitor and control its diaspora, including intimidation and self-censorship. Through personal narratives, the chapter reflects on the complexities faced by Chinese citizens abroad amidst increasing scrutiny and censorship by state authorities.
