CHAPTER

The Tension in the Defence of Australia Doctrine

The report itself seems to say that, well, we're abandoning this old idea of the defence of Australia doctrine. The term was coined in the 1980s to describe a strategy very much focused on defending the Australian continent. But I get the sense that the document itself is not so much an abandonment of defence of Australia. It's rather it attempts to update it and focus on great power threats. So the scale of the threat has grown, but the geographical emphasis of the old 1980s Defence of Australia doctrine remains.
