Many pursued assimilation, so that they could fit in better with their communities. The first Syrian Muslims and Christians both overwhelmingly wanted to be on the white side of the US color line. They also did exactly what the NAACP did which was develop a legal strategy to fight for their whiteness as well. But I certainly wanted to keep my grandmother's itineraries at the at the front.
