A team of virologists created H5N1 that could create airborne transmission. They didn't inject it into humans to see what would happen, so we don't really know how contagious it might have been. But if it was as contagious as COVID, that could be a civilization threatening pathogen. So in that case, I just don't see any moral or scientific justification for that kind of work.
