The Struggle to Create a Coherent Post-Soviet Russian Identity
Since 2012, there's been a really large sort of state directed effort to focus on creating a coherent post-Soviet Russian identity. The new social contract from 2012 onwards was, okay, you, the people, stay out of politics, but in return, you will belong to a great power. It built on the sense of humiliation and shame that many Russians feel in relation to the very traumatic and turbulent period of the 1990s when there was a lot of hope about a better life.
