The History of the Spice Islands
In the early 1400s, a Portuguese prince called Henry the Navigator began an aggressive campaign to make Portugal the preeminent naval power in the Atlantic. He dispatched expedition south along the African coast, discovering the Azores and settling the Cape Verde Islands. In 1488 they would round the Cape of Good Hope, a southern tip of Africa, setting the stage for a new trade route to the far east.
