Tonic Water - A Malaria Preventative
British officers in India invented tonic water as a malaria preventative because quinon on its own was too bitter. Even though by the late 1600s, there was an available treatment for malaria, people didn't discover the cause or transmission route of malaria until the late 1800s. The French had decided to build a canal through a little landmass connecting north and South America. In eight years, over 22,000 workers died in a construction project that cost more than $1 billion.
