I've just always been interested in it. I read a book by Simon Garfield, who's a very prolific writer. He tends to use a lot of archive material for his books. And he wrote a book about people's lives during the war,. Not soldiers in the war, but the people left at home in London involved in the Blitz or people working on farms and all that sort of thing. It was much more interesting to read about that than reading aboutSoldiers in the war or airmen or all that kind of thing. Victoria Wood was also interested in it - she said: 'You can't be serious when you say there is no such thing as an ordinary protest'
