Using Particle Accelerators in Particle Physics

The early experiments in particle physics were done using cosmic rays. The ability to make new discoveries that way kind of came to an end around the 1940s. But now when we're thinking about these larger scale big picture questions like dark matter, a lot of the detectors again become more passive and waiting for things traveling to us from space or through us as it were.
