AIDS and the New York Club Scene
In 1981, 41 gay men in New York and California had been diagnosed with a rare and often rapidly fatal form of cancer. The next year, researchers began calling it acquired immunodeficiency disease or AIDS. Mayor Ed Koch was criticized for being slow to take action in response to the crisis. Some people were fired from their jobs when they tested positive because so little was known about how the disease spread.
