Psychologists took inner city school kids who had very severe reading problems and then taught them to read Chinese. After a certain number of days doing this, these kids were learning Mandarin Chinese at the same rate as like suburban school kids. What was the difference? They weren't tapping into those conditioned elements of learned helplessness. Oh, I'm going to teach you to read in another language, read another language. I'm lousy in my own because I'm not smart.
