The accounting rules for aerial combat victories were simple. A pilot got credit for downing an enemy plane only if there was a witness to the cra because a wounded pilot might be able to nurse his plane back to safety. No one could confirm it, and there is no record of tom lanfear ever receiving medical treatment for a wounded hand. Then there was the claim of getting the second zero on his fourth day on guatocanal. He definitely got the one, but he'd adimately insisted he'd gotten two.
