Are You a Scholar of Religion Until You've Lost Two Worlds?

I imagine it becomes a very compelling thing to actually continue to study when you think there is something to this and it is more than what is presented as an either or. I often tell my graduate students that they have no business being a scholar of religion until they've lost at least two worlds. If you just lose one world, you can still be under the illusion that you can just adopt a second and that that will somehow solve everything. But once you've lost two worlds, you begin to understand that a world is just a world,. There's always another world and the worlds are infinite as it were. They're going to have to be found some other way.
