Italian state owned oil company ENI was one of the so-called independence, which rather private companies producing oil in the US. In a way, weirdly, these independents in the US looked favorably at the beginning to the creation of OPEC because that would possibly help drive up the price of oil. The founder of E&I, Rigo Matei, is remembered frankly to this day many of these oil-producing countries.
