One of the central concerns in the wars of the roses actually is the idea of what a king is supposed to do. Only the king could be an impartial arbiter of disputes within his kingdom. And I have to imagine that that sort of like vaguely nebulous relationship echoes in the past. Could, if there wasn't enough food, did kings get deposed?
