Charles Whitman's Killing
Charles Whitman opened fire on the UT Austin campus with a rifle in 1967. He killed three people before being stopped by an armored car carrying first responders who rescued some of his victims. Three Peace Corps volunteers were also shot and two high school students, Alec Hernandez and Karen Griffith both died from their wounds. The shooter then took aim at nearby Guadalupe Street which was home to coffee shops bookstores and other student hangouts. Charles could see literally hundreds of people going about their business below and all of them were potential targets of his murderous wrath.
