How should we understand ‘cancel culture’?

Moral Maze

CHAPTER

Cancel Culture?

In the 1980s, Labour councils who said there was a problem about racism were vilified as loony left. I think if you're looking at the history of our attitudes to issues like race and sexuality, then the battles in the 1980s are an interesting moment. And I'm interested in whether you think that the campaign that was wrong by newspapers and politicians to vilify those councils could appropriately be described as cancel culture. Sir, I have no particular view on the rather narrow example that you have just presented to me. We've talked about academic methodologies, and that is not, I think, way to conduct an academic discussion on questions of morality.
