The Draw of Academia

I think the draw of academia for me is that you are your own boss. In the end, companies are beholden to their shareholders. Academia is 100% the best place to do the kind of work I think we're all doing. How do you feel about the dominance of large language models right now? Is this a shiny object that's distracting us from other important problems or is this something that deserves the attention that it's getting?
