The Problems With Yiddish
Zionist leader Eliezer Ben-Yehuda wanted to revive Hebrew as a national language. Yiddish had 11 million speakers in Eastern Europe and was deeply embedded in Jewish life. But for the secular Jews in Western Europe, Yiddish was almost the opposite. It was too connected to the Orthodoxy of their backward cousins in Eastern Europe who refused to embrace modern life.
